Innovative construction methods

The application of advanced construction techniques, such as 3D printing, are helping the city accelerate its growth plans.

A city for FDI and innovation attracting strong levels of investment

According to the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business 2020 report, the UAE is ranked 1st in the MENA region and 16th globally for overall ‘ease of doing business’, 3rd in ‘dealing with construction permits’, 1st for ‘getting electricity’ and 9th for ‘enforcing contracts’.

In 2020, Dubai attracted US$6.7 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI), ranking the emirate first in the MENA region and fourth globally in terms of capital flows and first and third respectively in terms of the number of greenfield projects.

The city’s status as a global innovation hub is also being felt within the sector. Smart construction techniques are proliferating in line with Dubai’s 3D printing strategy, to ensure 25% of all new buildings are 3D printed by 2030. In a tangible demonstration of this ambition, Dubai unveiled the largest 3D printed building in the world towards the end of 2019, with Dubai Municipality’s new two-storey, 640 square metre facility, built using onsite 3D printing equipment with local components.

Striving for a digitally powered community

Underscoring the role technology is playing, in 2017 Dubai Land Department (DLD) became the world’s first government entity to adopt Blockchain technology by creating a shared network for all stakeholders, eliminating paper documents and introducing digitally signed contracts.

The network enables users to manage and track all requirements for rent/leasing, mortgage and purchase online. DLD also introduced the ‘Real Estate Self Transaction’ (REST) platform that enables people to conduct transactions with multiple parties from anywhere in the world, eliminating the need for paper-based documentation and enabling transparency to improve workflows.
